The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is group 1 elements called?
Alkali metals
How many electrons do group 1 metals have?
1 electron
What are some of the properties of group 1 metals?
They are all very reactive, they all have metallic structures.
What happens when you go down the group for group 1 and why?
Reactivity increases as you go down the group becuase the outer electron is further from the nucleus and easier to loose.
All group 1 metals burn in oxygen to form ______.
metal oxides.
All group 1 metals react with chlorine to form ________.
metal chlorides
All group 1 metals react with water to form ________ and release ______.
Lithium hydroxide
Hydrogen gas
Lithium + oxygen > what?
What is this in symbol equation (balanced)?
lithium oxide
4Li + O2 > 2Li2O
Lithium + chlorine > what?
What is this in symbol equation (balanced)?
Lithium chloride
2Li + Cl2 > 2LiCl
Lithium + water > what?
What is this in symbol equation (balanced)?
Lithium Hydroxide + Hydrogen
2Li + 2H2O > 2LiOH + H2
What is the melting/boiling point of a metal compared to a non-metal?
Metal: High
Non-Metal: Low
What is the density of a metal compared to a non-metal?
Metal: High
Non-Metal: Low
What is the malleability of a metal compared to a non-metal?
Metal: High
Non-Metal: Low (brittle)
What is the conductivity of a metal compared to a non-metal?
Metal: Yes
Non-Metal: No
Are the ions positive or negative in a metal compared to a non-metal?
Metal: Positive
Non-Metal: Negative
Why are Transitional Metals commonly used as catalysts in industry?
Because they can form ions with different charges.
What are Group 0 elements called?
Group 0 elements are called Noble Gases
How many electrons do Group 0 elements have and why is this important?
Group 0 elements have a full outer shell (usually 8 but Helium has 2). This is important as they are not reactive. This means they are also therefore monoatomic.
Group 0 elements are mono___
Monoatomic
What happens to the boiling point as you go down the group (Group 0)
Boiling point increases down the group as the number of electron shells increases.
What are group 7 elements called?
Group 7 elements are called Halogens
What type of molecules do group 7 elements form?
Diatomic molecules (Cl2, Br2)
What happens to the melting point as you go down the group (group 7)?
Melting point increases.
What happens to the reactivity as you go down the group (7)?
Reactivity decreases down the group because the outer electrons are further from the nucleus and it gets harder to attract an extra electron.
What happens when they (halogens) react with non metals?
They form a covalent molecule.
How does displacement work for Halogens?
A less reactive halogen will get displaced from a halide compound by a more reactive halogen. (Higher up is more reactive)
Metal + Non-Metal = ?
Ionic compound
Non-metal + Non-metal = ?
Covalent compound
Metal + Metal = ?
No reaction
