Q

CVS: describe the heart covering and heart wall

A
Heart covering:
Pericardium - a double serous membrane
Visceral pericardium- next to the heart
Parietal pericardium- outside layer
Serous fluid fills the space between the layers of pericardium

Heart Wall:
Epicardium: outside layer, the parietals pericardium, connective tissue layer
Myocardium: middle layer, mostly cardiac muscle
Endocardium: inner layer, endothelium

Q

CVS: explain how blood circulates through the heart

A

Blood in the heart chambers does not nourish the myocardium; the heart has its own nourishing circulatory system - coronary arteries - cardiac veins - blood empties into the right atrium via the coronary sinus

The heart conduction system: intrinsic conduction system (nodal system) ; heart muscles cell contract without nerve impulses in a regular continuous cycle

Q

CVS: explain and name the main heart valves

A

4 chambers:
Atria - receiving chambers
Right atrium
Left atrium

Ventricles - discharging chambers
Right ventricle
Left ventricle

Valves allow blood to flow in one direction:
Atrioventricular valves- between atria and ventricles
- biscupid/mitral valve (left)
- tricuspid valve(right)

Semilunar valves- between ventricle and artery

  • aortic semilunar valve
  • pulmonary valve
  • Valves are held in place by chordae tendineae (heart strings)
  • valves open as blood is pumped through and close to prevent backflow

Q

CVS: explain how the heart sets pace

A
  • special tissue sets the pace
    • sinoatrial node(right atrium)
      • pacemaker
    • atrioventricular node (junction of r&l atria and ventricle)
    • atrioventricular bundle (bundle of his)
    • purkinje fibres
