The parts of the Brain Flashcards
The Brainstem
Functions include controlling heartbeat, coordinate movements, and controls arousal. Also Contains the medulla, pons, reticular formation
The medulla
Sits at the base of the brainstem and responsible for controlling heartbeat and breathing
Pons
Sit above the medulla, and coordinates movements
Reticular formation
A nerve network that travels through the brainstem and thalamus. Plays in important role in controlling arousla
The Thalamus
Located on top of the brainstem, is the brain’s sensory control center, directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex and transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla
Cerebellum
Located at the rear of the brainstem, the cerebellum s responsible for processing sensory output, coordinating movement output, and enabling nonverbal learning and memory
The Limbic System
Consist of the Hypothalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala. The limbic system function is learning and memory, emotions, and directs maintenance activities (eating, breathing, sweating, swallowing)
Hippocampus
Located in the temporal lobe of each cerebral cortex (shaped like a seahorse). The hippocampus is involved in learning and memory
Hypothalamus
Located below the thalamus, involved in directing maintenance activities such as eating, drinking, body temperature, and is also linked to emotion and reward
Amygdala
two lima bean sized neural clusters in the limbic system, linked to emotions such as aggression and fear
Cerebrum and Cerebral Cortex
Shaped like a wrinkled oversized walnut and is located at the outermost part of the brain. Is the control and thinking center of the brain, also involved in motor and sensory functions
Corpus Callosum
Large C shaped white matter that divides the cerebral cortex into left and right hemispheres. Allows for communication amongst the left and right hemispheres . Responsible for transmitting sensory, motor, and cognitive information between both halves of the brain
Frontal Lobe
Located at the front of the skull, involved in speaking, muscle movement, and in making plans and judgement
Motor cortex
Located in the back of the frontal lobe, controls voluntary movements
Parietal Lobe
Located at the top of the brain, receives sensory input related to touch, processes information form sense of touch, texture, pain, comfort, and temperature, can be involved in memory and learning
