the parts of the brain Flashcards
the brain is composed of how many parts
3 parts
- hindbrain?
located in the rear base of the skull
includes: the cerebellum,medulla,pons
cerebellum
controls posture, balance and voluntary movements
medulla
controls breathing, heart rate and reflexes
pons
functions asbridge between spinal cord and brain procedures chemicals for sleep
- midbrain
small parts of the brain above the pons that arouses the brain,
integrates sensory information and relays it upwards
medulla, pons, midbrain make up most of the brain stem and the reticular activating system (RAS) which alerts the brain to incoming signals and regulates sleep and wake cycles.
- forebrain
covers the brains central core
outer layer of the forebrain
its called the cereal cortex,
it controls higher thinking process…. ability to read, learn, see, understand and store information
the inner layer of the forebrain
the cerebrum
limbic system
regulates our emotions and motivations
contains the hypothalamus, amygdala,thalmus,and hippocampus
Thalamus
which intergrates all sensory input except smell and relays information to and from the cortex
just below the Thamalus
Hypothamalus
controls hunger, thirst, sexual behaviour and reactions to temperature.
Amygdala
controls emotions like rage and anger and lack of empathy
Hippocampus
helps in the formation of memories
