The Particulate Nature of Matter Flashcards
What are the 4 properties of solids
- They have a definite mass and shape
- They are rigid
- They are almost incompressible
- They have a greater density than liquids or gases
What are the 4 properties of liquids
- They are almost incompressible
- Have a fixed volume but no shape
- They can flow
- Boiling points above room temperature
What are the properties of gases
- Compressibility
- Expansibility
- Ability to diffuse
- Low density
Describe the structure of solids, liquids and gases
Solids - closely packed, restricted movement
Liquids - mare spaced out, free movement, frequently collide
Gases - largely spaced out, sometimes collide, free movement
What is the kinetic particle theory
All matter is made up of many small particles that are constantly in a state of random motion
Define diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Describe the rate of diffusion on molecular mass
The closer the distribution of the material gets to equilibrium, the slower the rate of diffusion becomes. Mass of the molecules diffusing: heavier molecules move more slowly; therefore, they diffuse more slowly. The reverse is for lighter molecules
What is a homogenous compound
It is a compound belonging to a series of compounds
What is a heterogenus compound
A compound consisting of different compounds e.g. air
