The Particulate Nature of Matter Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 4 properties of solids

A
  • They have a definite mass and shape
  • They are rigid
  • They are almost incompressible

Q

Describe the structure of solids, liquids and gases

A

Solids - closely packed, restricted movement
Liquids - mare spaced out, free movement, frequently collide
Gases - largely spaced out, sometimes collide, free movement

Q

What is the kinetic particle theory

6
Q

Define diffusion

A

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration

Q

Describe the rate of diffusion on molecular mass

A

The closer the distribution of the material gets to equilibrium, the slower the rate of diffusion becomes. Mass of the molecules diffusing: heavier molecules move more slowly; therefore, they diffuse more slowly. The reverse is for lighter molecules
