what is the first reading?
The first reading is when the Government first introduces the Bill into the House of Commons.
Where it a formal announcement of the Bill is followed by a vote to allow it to move to the next stage.
What is the second reading?
The second reading is when the main principles are considered and debated of the Bill, by the whole House of Commons and a vote is taken.
What is the Committee stage?
The Committee stage is when the Bill is now examined in detail by a small committee made up of MPs from different parties.
What is the report stage?
The report stage is when the MPs are given an opportunity to consider the committee’s report and debate and vote on any amendments they might wish to make the Bill.
What is the third reading?
The third reading is the final chance for the Commons to debate the Bill’s content.
No amendments are allowed at this stage, so the House of Commons either vote to pass the Bill or reject it.
The Lords?
If the Lords have amended the Bill, it must return to the Houses of Commons, so MPs can decide whether to accept or reject the Lord’s amendments.
The Houses of Commons will have the final say.
The Royal Assent?
Once the Bill has been passed through Parliament, it gets passed to the Monarch for signing, which is the Royal Assent.
The Royal Assent - the Monarch’s agreement to make the Bill into an Act of Parliament or law.
