The Pancreas Flashcards
What parts of the pancreas are part of the exocrine system?
- pancreatic duct
- enzymes for digestion
What parts of the pancreas are part of the endocrine system?
- the Islets of Langerhans
- ductless
- vascular
- hormones
What types of cells make up the islets of Langerhans?
Alpha Cells
- glucagon
- raises sugar levels
Beta Cells
- insulin
- lowers sugar levels
What is the process of sugar in the body?
- digested
- absorbed into blood stream
- transported around the body
- used as fuel for cellular respiration
What does it mean for sugar to be soluble?
It means that it is osmotically active/affects water potential
What is the normal blood sugar level?
80-100mg per 100ml of blood
What happens when sugar levels are raised?
- insulin is produced from beta cells
- glucose is converted to glycogen and stored
- rate of respiration increases (metabolic rate increases)
What happens after insulin is produced from beta cells?
- sugar levels go back to normal
- negative feedback process
Why do blood sugar levels drop?
- after exercise
- lack of food
What happens when sugar levels drop?
- glucagon is produced from the alpha cells
- glycogen is converted to glucose
What is diabetes?
- a breakdown of cells in the pancreas
- lack of insulin
- high level of glucose in the blood
What are the symptoms of diabetes?
- tiredness
- large quantities of dilute urine
- glucose in urine
- great thirst
- bloodshot eyes
