Virginia, Arkansas, Tenessee, North Carolina refused to send troops to lincoln and joined the confedercy, bringing the total number of states in the confederacy to 18.
What was the goal of the union at the start of the war?
To unite the nation, not end slavery
what advantages did the union have?
The fact that it contained nearly 3/4 of US population meant that it was able to create larger armies
Northern states were more industrialized and could produce more supplies for the war

The union suffered from poor leadership
