The Origins Of Life Flashcards
What theory did Louis Pasteur challenge?
The theory of spontaneous generation
What did Aristotle’s theory claim?
It said that organisms could arise spontaneously in mud and decaying matter.
Briefly explain Louis Pasteur’s experiment.
He put broth in two different flasks and boiled them. After the liquid was sterelized, he took one flask and broke off the swan neck and he left the other one untouched. After a while, he saw that the broken one was swimming with microbial life whilst the other one was clean.
What is Pasteurization?
It’s the partial sterilization of liquids like milk, orange juice, wine, beer, etc.
What did the Miller-Urey experiment show?
It demonstrated that organic compounds that are essential to cellular life can be easily made under early Earth’s conditions.
Define evolution
The change in a species’ characteristics over multiple generations in a process of natural selection.
