THE ORGANISATION OF CELLS Flashcards
What is a tissue?
Group of specialised cells carrying out a particular function in the body.
What is an organ?
Structure made up of several different types of tissues grouped together, carrying out a particular function in the body.
What are epithelial tissues?
Tissues that form the lining of surfaces inside & outside the body.
What is an organ system?
Group of organs working together to carry out particular functions in the body.
What are the four main tissue types in the human body?
epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous.
What do all tissue cells rest upon?
An extracellular basement membrane.
What is connective tissue?
Main supporting tissue in the body, includes bone tissue and cartilage tissue.
How are cells capable of carrying out their specific function?
They have differentiated during development.
Give an example of an organ system in the body.
The nervous system, includes the brain, spinal cord and all peripheral nerves.
