What Island did Odysseus and his men travel to first
Ismararus: Land of the Cicones
Odysseus goes to find some food and then they raid the island. This leads to consequences.
What Island did they travel to after Ismarus
Lotus eaters: after they left Ismarus, the men had some of the plant and so did Odysseus excerpt they were drawn into the fruit and Odysseus sobered up quickly
Where did the men go to after lotus eaters and what happened?
- Odysseus&Men come to island of the cyclops Polyphemus
- Odysseus wanted to wait to receive Xenia from Polyphemus
- On doing so the cyclops got very angry and threatened Odysseus to leave- O’ did not obey and therefore lost 2 of his men
- When Odysseus left he stabbed Polyphemus in the eye and told him his name was “nobody” so that when people ask him who did it, ‘p’ will be confused
- Stupidly Odysseus told Polyphemus his real name unknowingly that Poseidon is his father.
Where did Odysseus and the men go after the cyclops island and why?
Aeolia: Aeolus treated Odysseus very kindly and gave him a bag of wind.
This would help him get back to Ithaca
He did it tell the men what was inside the bag
The men were interested in what was in it and when they opened it the wind took them back to Aeolia and Aeolus did not give them more wind because he thought the gods were punishing him.
What Island did then go to after Aeolia?
Teleyplos(Land of the Laestrygonians: 3 men go to the island and the kind eats his men and then 11 ships are destroyed.
Where do the men go in book after Telepylos?
Circe Island: some of the men go to find food and see Circe
Curve turns the men into pigs and Eurycleus tells Odysseus
Hermes brings bag of moly and Odysseus uses this to stop Circes magic.
He threatened her and she turns the men back to humans.
But then Odysseus and Circe make love for a year
Where does Odysseus go in book 7?
Phaecia
Where do they go after the underworld
Circes island: They go back to give Elpanor a respectful burial
Where does Circe tell the man to go next after the underworld?
The island of the sirens: Circe warned him that the sirens are creatures that lure men towards them.
What two cliffs did the men have to pass through?
Scylla : six headed monster that eat six people at the same time.
Charybdis: Whirpool that sucks ships in.
The men had to choose which side to pass and they chose both and he lost six men.
What happened in Helios? (Zeus)
The sun gods Island (Zeus) The men are told not to eat the cattle of the sun.
But they get sick of the food Circe gave them and the men eat the cattle of the sun.
Consequences: the men died after a storm created by Zeus and Poseidon made it worse,leaving Odysseus alone.
When Zeus got angry and created a storm, where did he take Odysseus?
Oggiya (Calypso island): he is punished for 7 years and lived with a nymph called Calyspo
When Odysseus is freed after 7 years where does he go?
Posiden finds out that Odysseus has been freed
He gets angry
Creates a storm
Athena calms downs the storm
Ino puts a veil on Odysseus to keep him safe until he lands on an island.
