Destroyer Archetype
An archetypal character who is seen as evil and who brings about destruction for destruction’s sake. The Cyclops and Voldemort are examples.
Archetype
An original or perfect model upon which subsequent examples are based. The Odyssey is an archetype.
Epic / Journey Epic
A long narrative poem about the adventures of a hero who embodies the values of the culture and must overcome obstacles to reach their destination.
Hero
Someone who must go on a quest or adventure and overcome many obstacles obstacles to reach their destination, but gains wisdom as a result.
Homeric Simile
An extended metaphor, usually several lines long, that compares two things and explains all the areas of similarity. Compares something abstract to something well known or concrete.
Invocation
A prayer to the gods or God asking for guidance or inspiration.
Myth
A traditional or legendary story that uses fantasy or metaphors to express ideas about life that cannot be expressed easily on realistic terms.
Rhapsode
A person who traveled from town to town to recite things such as stories, tales, etc. Homer was a rhapsode.
Temptress Archetype
An archetypal character (usually a women) whose intentions are not evil, but who nonetheless brings about the downfall of a man / men because of her beauty or sexual allure. Helen of Troy is an example.
Transgressor Archetype
An archetypal character who attempts something that has never been done and pushes the limit on human knowledge, often encroaching on realm of gods, which usually results in their downfall and great destruction. Dr. Frankenstein is an example.
Trickster Archetype
An archetypal character who breaks or bends the rules of the gods or nature, relying on cunning rather than strength. Hermes is an example.
Aeaea
Home of Circe, the witch goddess.
Alcinous
King of Phaecia.
Calypso
Beautiful goddess nymph who keeps Odysseus on her island for seven years.
Charybdis
Female monster who sucks in water three times a day to make a deadly whirlpool.
Cicones
People living on the southwestern coast of Thrace who battled Osysseus and his men on their journey home.
Circe
Witch goddess who turned Odysseus’s men into swine.
