The October Revolution Flashcards
Effect of the Kornilov Affair for the Soviets
- Large increase in support via their success and use of propaganda (eg. “Pravda”)
- Oct 9 - Adopted a resolution to create a ‘military revolutionary centre’ to protect Petrograd.
Military Revolutionary Committee (“MRC”)
- Set up by Trotsky and Dzerzhinsky
- Included 66 members, 48 of which were Bolsheviks
Securing Allegiance to the Soviet
-Commissars were sent to all Petrograd garrison units: 16 out of 18 declared their allegiance to the Soviet, rather than the Provisional Government
Trotsky largely organised the revolution, sending Bolshevik speakers around factories to whip up working-class support
-Troops are massed in the Bolshevik headquarters- Red Guards, former soldiers and policemen
Resources of the Military Revolutionary Committee (“MRC”)
Controlled: -200,000 Red Guards -60,000 Baltic sailors -150,000 sailors (All were of the remaining Petrograd Garrison unit)
Date of the Attack
October 24th
Preventing the Provisional Government from Gaining Help
- Soldiers who had previously served the Provisional Government offered little resistance and the Petrograd Garrison backed the uprising
- Soldiers loyal to the MRC occupied the post and telegraph offices, as well as the railway stations. The Bolsheviks therefore extended their control over the city’s infrastructure
End of the Revolution
- Trotsky and the Red Guards successfully arrested the majority of the Provisional Government
- The Winter Palace was defended by a small number of female troops who were outnumbered.
- Oct 25 - the MRC announces that the Provisional Government has been ‘deposed’. Kerensky flees to America.
Support of the Kronstadt Sailors
- The sailors wanted a Soviet government, though not specifically a Bolshevik one
- A backup plan of threatening the government with the battleship “Aurora” is never needed
