The nitrogen cycle Flashcards
What are forms of nitrogen?
Organic and inorganic
What is: Nitrogen fixation *Nitrification *Assimilation *Ammonification *Denitrification?
Nitrogen fixation: In this initial step, atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted into ammonia (NH3).
Nitrification: * In this process, the ammonia is converted into
nitrates by nitrifying bacteria found in well-aerated
soils.
Assimilation: Plants absorb nitrogen compounds from the soil with the help of their roots, which are available in the form of nitrite ions, nitrate ions or ammonium ions.
Ammonification: Decomposers such as bacteria/fungi break down protein found in dead plants and animals, urine and faeces into ammonia.
Dentrification: Denitrifying bacterial species- Clostridium and Pseudomonas, process nitrate to gain oxygen and give out free nitrogen gas as a byproduct
