What were the aims of the New Deal?
Relief: Help the extreme poor, feed children, get people some money and jobs.
Recovery: Economy, industries going, and working to earn money.
Reform: Better place ordinary people. unemployment insurance, pensions, and help for the sick, disabled, and those in need.
What were the benefits of Roosevelts ‘Fire-side chats’?
Spoke directly to the people gaining their trust, and inspiring confidence.
Spoke directly and simply to the people about plans, to understand what was going on which was a huge benefit for both the people and for Roosevelt himself.
People to work with him in his first broadcast which was successful.
The most important broadcast was his first when he dealt with the issues of the banks. Persuaded Americans to go back and trust the banks again.
What actions did Roosevelt take to solve the banking crisis?
4-day national bank holiday
The emergency banking act was passed.
About 5% of banks were unsound banks then shut down while the rest were given grants and advice by the government.
Explained what happened to the American people
Allowing them to understand and inspire confidence.
Gaining trust, to go back to banks.
Describe the actions taken by Roosevelt to help the unemployed
The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) provides work 18-25, carrying out conservation work, planting trees, etc. The Public Works Administration (PWA) was a major construction project, such as dams, bridges, highways, schools, and hospitals.
PWA spent 7 million for millions of jobs consruction jobs.
4 million jobs were created due to the construction of different infrastructures.
How did the New Deal help farmers?
The Farm Credit Administration (FCA) loaned out money to 1/5 of farmers, to not lose farms. The AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Agency), paid to produce less food, killing animals, plowing crops.
Less food = Prices rise from 1933 and 1937
Cotton farmers= paid to plow up 10 million acres.
The government bought 6 million piglets, some given to the poor while 9/10s were destroyed.
What actions did Roosevelt take to help the poor?
FERA was given 500 million dollars to help homeless Americans in need.
Money spent on increase soup kitchens, clothes, schools, unemployment insurance.
The Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC) loaned money to over a million people.
7 billion dollars spent by PWA (Public Works Administration) employing skilled men to build dams, sewage systems, and houses.
How did Roosevelt attempt to try and improve conditions in the industry?
The NRA (National Recovery Administration) was set up by the (NIRA) to get the industry on it's feet. Codes were made for each industry prices of production were fixed. , Producing certain amounts of goods at a certain price.
This Code meant limited working hours, minimum wages and forbade child labor.
Businesses were allowed to use the NRA sign. Blue eagle.
Workers given the right to join trade unions, and strikes, could not get fired for being union members.
What was the TVA?
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) develop the Tennessee Valley, a poverty-stricken area, with soil erosion and flooding which cut through seven states.
The building of 33 dams to control the Tennessee River.
Power stations were built at the dams to provide power TVA became the biggest producer of electricity in America.
Thousands of jobs were created, the land was conserved, improved, new forests were planted, health and welfare facilities were provided.
