What was the AAA?
Agricultural adjustment act
What did the AAA do?
Paid farmers to grow less crops so that the prices would go up

Some food was also destroyed (6 million piglets killed)

Some of the unemployed were poorly treated e.g. Made to stand in long queues in very hot weather
What was the CWA?
Civil Works Administration
What did the CWA do?
Set up to provide emergency help in the winter of 1933
How many people worked on buildings projects In the CWA?
4 million before it was closed down in spring
What was the CCC?
Civilian Conservation Crops
What did the CCC do?
Gave unemployed men ages 17-24 work in national forests and parks
3 million men involved in total, gave experience and training
How many trees did the CCC plant?
1.3 billion
What were the men of the CCC given?
Lived in camps, given food, shelter and a small wage
What was the negative of the CCC?
It mostly helped white men
What was the NRA?
National Recovery Administration
Why was the NRA set up?
To help improve working conditions e.g. Fair wages, get rid of children working
What did the NRA do?
Wrote 557 codes that businesses were meant to follow
What was the PWA?
Public Works Administration
What did the PWA do?
Had $3.3 billion to spend on buildings projects to provide jobs
How many roads and schools was the PWA responsible for building?
50,000 miles of road
13,000 schools
What is the WPA?
Works Progress Administration
What was the WPA set up to do?
Provide work through projects
How many people did WPA help at a time and how long for?
Usually had about 2 million workers at a time with a 1 year contract
What was the TVA?
Tennessee Valley Authority
What was the TVA’s purpose?
1933 One of the biggest Schemes
Wanted to build 20 dams through Tennessee to make the land better for farming
What was a bonus of the TVA?
Put hydroelectric power into an area with little electricity before
What the the HOLC?
Home Owners Land Corporation
What did the HOLC do?
Gave loans to home buyers
300,000 were given each year so people could afford to buy homes
What was the Social Security Act?
Gave old age pensions and unemployment money for the first time
Helped the disabled and children in need
What were the unemployment benefits of the Social Security Act?
$18 a week for 16 weeks
What was the national labour relations act?
1935
Replaces the NRA
Protected workers rights to Join a trade union
What was the soil conservation act?
1935
Replaced AAA
Allowed government to continue subsidising farmers
