The New Deal Flashcards
FDR
Franklin Delano Roosevelt wins the 1932 election. As Governor of New York State he set up the first state-run relief scheme, making him popular with the workers. He promised a New Deal for everyone. He encouraged the government to take a more active role in the economy.
What did FDR promise
Promised more public works and relief schemes. FDR was more personable, less aloof, addressing the nation over radio ‘fireside chats’, where he explained policies in a down to earth way. FDR wins by a landslide and has the majority of seats in congress.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC):
allowed unemployed men to sign up for 6 months, supplying them with small jobs on national parks and environmental projects. 2.5 million young men were helped in this way.
Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)
set quotas to reduce farm production and push prices up. Helped farmers modernise farming methods, to conserve and protect the soil. Modernisation did, however, put some farmers out of work.
Public Work Administration
used federal money to build schools, dams, bridges, roads and airports, creating millions of jobs in the short and long-term.
National Recovery Administration
improved working conditions and banned child labour, it also set fair wages. This scheme was voluntary though. 2 million employers joined the scheme, however many did not because it was voluntary.
Tennessee Valley Authority
builds a series of dams on the Tennessee river that would flood, irrigating the area, providing electricity, and creating thousands of jobs.
