impact on African Americans
A
- Thousands received much more relief than ever before. Around 200,000 blacks benefited from the CCC program and they got a large share of housing in slum-clearance projects. Also, black people were given positions of responsibility in the New Deal administration.
- 50% unemployment, 25% for white people
- Whites get higher wage
- Still Jim Crow laws in the south

- Only about 8000 women were included in the CC programme
- The number of women employed did go up during the 1930s but this was largely because they were cheap labour
- One area where women did advance was in the New Deal agencies themselves
- Given positions of responsibilities, running the agencies

o When banks re-opened 90% deposits were intact

o New deal helped agriculture in a significant way
o FDR’s strategy of simply reducing supply workers worked better than Hoover’s
o In 1933 6 million pigs slaughtered as $100 million paid to cotton farmers to plough crops
o As supply dropped, prices rose, however WWII largely helped to fix this problem finally
