The neurologic exam and reflexes Flashcards
Components of the neurologic exam
- Mental state
- Gait and posture
- Cranial nerve tests
- Leg and body reflexes
- Proprioception
- Palpate for painful areas
Mental state
asses behavioral responses to the environment and our focused test
Gait and posture
Asses balance and coordination reflexes and strength
Cranial nerve test
Asses reflexes of the head and face and some responses to those tests
Leg and body reflexes
Asses leg reflexes, skin reflex and perineal reflexes
Proprioception
Asses balance and coordination reflexes
Palpate for painful areas
Asses behavioral responses to the exam
Lesion location
We use clues from the neurologic exam to help us know where there is trouble in the nervous system
- use normal and abnormal findings to narrow things down
3 main areas of lesion locations
- Brain (CNS)
- Neuromuscular (PNS)
- Spinal cord (CNS)
Brain (CNS) sections:
- Cerebrothalamic
- Cerebellum
- Brainstem
- Cranial nerves
Spinal cord (CNS) sections:
- C1- C5
- C6 - T2
- T3 - L3
- L4 - S3
- Sacrocaudal
Neuromuscular (PNS) section:
- Peripheral nerve
- Neuromuscular junction
- Muscle
Responses
- Conscious, behavioral responses to a stimulus
- Usually manifestation of a learned behavior
- like yelling “OUCH!” when touching something hot
Cerebrum
part of the brain for conscious awareness
Complex intersegmental reflex
- The reflex involves multiple segments in the nervous system
- Test more broad area in the nervous system
