The Nervous System- Reflexes Flashcards
What does a receptor do?
It detects a stimulus
Describe the reflex arc
The receptor detects stimuli. A message is sent to the sensory neurone which carried electrical impulse. A message is then passed to the central nervous system, aka relay neurone, and then a message is passed to the motor neurone which also carries electrical impulse. Finally the message is passed to the effector which is a muscle or q gland
What is a synapse?
A synapse connects two neurones. Electrical impulse is carried and a chemical is released and that causes the electrical impulse to be transferred onto the next neurone
What is that chemical released called?
Neurotransmitter
What would the receptor be if the stimulus was light?
The eye
What would the receptor be if the stimulus was sound?
The ear
What would the stimulus be if the receptor was the tongue?
Taste
What would the stimulus and the receptor be if there was perfume?
The stimulus would be smell and the receptor would be the nose
What would the receptor be if the stimulus is pressure or heat?
Skin
What is a reflex action?
When a response is automatic and fast
What happens when when you focus on something else and you change its location?
The size of your lenses changes
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment
