The Nervous System Flashcards
What is an axon in a neurone?
A length of cytoplasm stretched out that pass electrical impulses
What surrounds the axon?
A fatty sheath
What does the fatty sheath covering the axon do?
Acts as an electrical insulator, shielding the neurone
What is the gap between two neurones called?
Synapse
How do chemicals cross the synapse?
Impulse triggers the release of transmitter chemicals which then bind to receptors making a new electrical impulse
Complete:
Stimulus - 1 - 2 Neurone - 3 - 4 Neurone - 5 - Response
1) Receptor
2) Sensory
3) CNS
4) Motor
5) Effector
What is a reflex arc?
The route taken by the information in a reflex
Name a drug that prevents impulses crossing the synapse
Ecstasy
What does ecstasy do to cause the serotonin to build up?
Blocks sites in the synapse increasing the concentration
What part of the brain is responsible for intelligence, language, memory and consciousness?
The cerebral cortex
How does an MRI scan help scientists learn about the brain?
During the exam the patient is asked to do things which will show up as active in the brain
What do neurones do?
Carry impulses from receptors to the CNS
