The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 2 main divisions of the nervous system
Central nervous system and the Peripheral Nervous System
Central Nervous System (CNS)
- comprises of the brain and the spinal cord
- the role of the CNS is to integrate and co-ordinate all of the incoming neural information and to initiate neural messages which are then sent to the rest of the body
The spinal cord …
- enables communication between the brain (CNS) and the rest of the body (PNS)
Motor (efferent)
information from the brain (cns) to the the body (pns)
Sensory (afferent)
information from the body (PNS) to the brain (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
- comprises of all nerves and neurones in the rest of the body including our muscles, organs and glands
What are the 2 functions of the PNS
1) to communicate info from the bodes organs, muscles and glands to the CNS
2) To communicate info from the CNS to the bodes organs, muscles and glands
What are the 2 divisions of the PNS
The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system,
Somatic nervous system
- Sometimes referred to as the skeletal / sensory nervous system,
2 main functions of the somatic nervous system
1) VOLUNTARY movement of skeletal muscles
2) and has a sensory function, which involves receiving sensory information such as pressure and temperature and communication the to the CNS
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Links the CNS to the bodes non-skeletal muscles (smooth and visceral) as well as internal organs and glands. It operates without voluntary control or conscious awareness, regulating our involuntary bodily functions necessary for survival such as HR, BR, sweat, Digestion
What are the 2 divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System
The sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system
The sympathetic nervous system
- The sympathetic nervous system is activated when arousal is increased, due to a perceived threat or in times of stress
- It prepares the body for action to either run away, fight the threat or remaining
- it increase bodily functions such as heart rate, breathing rate an decreases others such as digestion, bladder control etc
what are the 2 main functions of the parasympathetic nervous system
Maintaining homeostasis or normal bodily functioning
e.g resting HR, BR, digestion etc
returning our body to astute of calm after a period of increased arousal
e.g Decreasing HR, BR
The fight/flight response
is an innate, adaptive response that is critical for survival. With the involvement of the sympathetic NS, it increases arousal and prepares our body to deal with a situation that is perceived to be threatening or stressful
