The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
Key features
A
A specialised network of cells and our primary communication system. Two main functions:
- To collect, process and respond to information in the environment
- To co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body.
Divided into the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
2
Q
Structure + function of the CNS
A
- Made up of the brain and spinal cord
- The brain is the centre of all conscious awareness
- Cerebral cortex is very developed in humans and is what distinguishes our higher mental functions from those of animals
- The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and is responsible for reflex actions
- It passes messages from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS
3
Q
Structure + function of the PNS
A
- The PNS transmits messages, via millions of neuron’s, to and from the nervous system
- PNS is further divided into the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system
- The ANS governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
- The SNS controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors.
