The Nervous System Flashcards

1
Q

Key features

A

A specialised network of cells and our primary communication system. Two main functions:
- To collect, process and respond to information in the environment
- To co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body.
Divided into the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system

Q

Structure + function of the CNS

A
  • Made up of the brain and spinal cord
  • The brain is the centre of all conscious awareness
  • Cerebral cortex is very developed in humans and is what distinguishes our higher mental functions from those of animals
  • The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and is responsible for reflex actions
  • It passes messages from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS

Q

Structure + function of the PNS

A
  • The PNS transmits messages, via millions of neuron’s, to and from the nervous system
  • PNS is further divided into the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system
  • The ANS governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
  • The SNS controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors.
