the nervous system Flashcards
What does the CNS consist of
Brain and spinal cord
What is the role of the brain and the spinal cord in the CNS
Spinal cord sends information to the brain from the PNS and sends signals to the PNS from the brain
What are the main functions of the CNS
Controls reflex behaviours as well as mental functioning, physical processes and behaviour
What is the peripheral nervous system responsible for
Carries messages back and fourth between the CNS and the muscles, organs and senses in the body
What is the somatic nervous system main function
Responsible for conscious perception and voluntary movement of skeletal muscles
What neurones are involved in the somatic nervous system and what are their roles
Somatic NS receives sensory information from the outside world and sends this to the brain via sensory neurons
Through motor neurones sends signals from the brain to the muscles to bring about action
What is the autonomic nervous system responsible for
Involuntary control of the body including reflex movement and organ function such as breathing with control of smooth muscles and glands
What neurons are present in the autonomic nervous system
Has no sensory neurons and only motor neurons to bring about action
What is the sympathetic nervous system
Fight or flight response to prepare for action
What is the parasympathetic nervous system
Rest and digest response leading the body into a relaxed state
