The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
- the central nervous system
- the peripheral nervous system
What’s the CNS made up of?
- the brain
- the spinal cord
What’s the role of the brain in the CNS?
It analyses and stores information and directs the actions of the body.
What’s the role Spinal cord in the CNS?
Relays information to and from the brain. Also responsible for reflex actions.
What’s the role of the CNS?
Controls the body’s nervous system.
What’s the role of the peripheral nervous system?
Consists of all other neurons/nerve cells across the body.
What’s the two components of the PNS?
- somatic nervous system
- autonomic nervous system
What’s the role of the somatic nervous system?
Enables us to respond to sensory information and to perform voluntary movements and actions.
What’s the role of the autonomic nervous system?
Regulates involuntary functions such as breathing, dilation/constriction of blood vessels and increases + decreases heart rate.
This is divided into 2 further divisions.
What are the 2 divisions of the ANS?
- the sympathetic branch
- the parasympathetic branch
What’s the role of the sympathetic branch?
Body’s quick response mobilising system, it gets the body ready for action - our ‘flight or fight’ response.
What’s the role of the parasympathetic branch?
Body’s more slowly activated dampening system. Returns the body to a calmer state after a period of activation - called ‘rest and digest’.
