The nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two main sub-systems of the nervous system?
A
- Central nervous system- Controls behaviour and regulates biological processes
- Peripheral nervous system- transmits messages via millions of neurones to and from the CNS
2
Q
What are the two components of the central nervous system?
A
- Brain- responsible for higher mental functions
- spinal cord- transmits information to and from the brain and controls reflex actions
3
Q
What are the two sub-divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
A
- Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
- Somatic nervous system (SNS)
4
Q
What is the role of the somatic nervous system?
A
Controls VOLENTARY movements and deals with skeletal muscles
made up of sensory and motor neurones
5
Q
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system?
A
Controls INVOLENTARY body responses and deals with smooth muscles and glands
6
Q
What are the two sub-divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
A
- The sympathetic system- increase bodily activities and mobalizes body for fight or flight
- the parasympathetic system- restores body to resting levels and conserves energy
