The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous systems 2 main function
To collect process and respond to information in the environment.
To co-ordinate the working organs and cells in the body.
What does the nervous system do
The nervous system consists of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system and is a specialised network of cells in the human body and is our primary internal communication system.
Central nervous system
Made up of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
Transmits messages via millions of neurones to and from the CNS
Somatic nervous system
Transmits information from the senses to the CNS and also directs muscles to act
Autonomic Nervous System
transmits autonomic signals, such as breathing
Sympathetic nervous system
Involved in preparation for fight or flight response
parasympathetic nervous system
Returns body to resting state and is also involved in the fight or flight response
spinal cord
Passes messages to and from the brain and the PNS and also is responsible for reflexes
