THE NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
what is the nervous system?
-Specialised network of cells in the human body/ primary internal communication system
Functions:
-To collect, process and respond to info in the environment
-To coordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
What are the two subsystems involved in the nervous system
Central nervous system (CNS) - connects the brain and spinal cord and is the origin of all complex demands
Peripheral nervous system (PNS) - transits messages to and from the CNS via neurons.
What is the outer layer of the brain called?
-The brain outer layer is known as the cerebral cortex and is split into two hemispheres
What is the Peripheral Nervous System and what are the two subsystems involved?
-The PNS transmits messages, via millions of neurons (nerve cells) to and from the CNS
- Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) - governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
- Somatic Nervous System (SNS) - controls muscle movement and recieves info from the sensory receptors
What is a gland?
An organ in the body that synthesizes substances such as hormones
