the nervous system Flashcards
what is the central nervous system made up of?
it is made up of the brain and the spinal cord.
what is the brain the centre of?
the centre of all consciousness
what is the spinal cord responsible for?
responsible for reflex actions and it is an extension of the brain. it passes messages to and from the brain and connect nerves to the peripheral nervous system.
what is the function of the peripheral nervous system?
it transmits messages through millions of neurons to and from the central nervous system
what is the peripheral nervous system sub-divided into?
the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system.
what is the somatic nervous system?
they control muscle movement and receives info from sensory receptors and it is voluntary and largely conscious.
what is the autonomic nervous system?
it controls the body’s involuntary and vital functions such as breathing, heart rate, digestion.
what is the autonomic nervous system divided into?
the sympathetic nervous system(fight or flight) and the parasympathetic nervous system(rest and digest).
what is the sympathetic nervous system and what are 3 examples?
it prepares the body to experience energy for example, accelerate heart beat, relaxes bladder and stimulates adrenaline.
what is the parasympathetic nervous system and what are 3 examples?
it maintains and conserves body energy and functions for example, it slows heartbeat, contracts bladder and stimulate digestion.
what are the two main functions of the nervous system?
to collect and process and respond to info in the environment and to co-ordinate the working of diff organs and cells in the body.
