The Nervous/Circulatory system and lungs Flashcards
What are nerves?
Nerves are complex fibres which conduct electrochemical impulses
Where are the nerves from and to the body grouped together at?
Within the Spinal cord
What is the purpose of the brain?
Controls and coordinates the nervous signals
What are the 3 systems of the nervous system?
The motor system (muscular control) and the sensory system (information from the senses to the brain) and the autonomic system ( involuntary functions)
What is an example of involuntary function?
Digestion, heart beat and breathing
What is the Nervous system mainly made of?
Brain , spinal cord and a network fo nerve fibres
Where is blood first pumped to?
the lungs to absorb oxygen
Which tube supplies the blood to the lungs?
the pulmonary artery
Which side of the heart pumps blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs?
The right side of the heart
Which tube brings back the blood from the lungs to the heart?
The pulmonary vein to the left side of the heart
Which tube pumps the oxygenated blood to the every tissue?
the aorta and the arterial system
What happens to the deoxygenated blood?
It returns through the veins to the right side of the heart again.
What is gaseous interchange?
The uptake by the blood of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide
Where does gaseous exchange take place?
In the alveoli of the lungs
What are the alveoli surrounded by?
A mesh of blood capillaries which lie very close to the lumen inside the alveolus
