Human needs
Needs that must be fulfilled to some degree for us to function reasonably well in the human world and for our health and well-being.
Physical needs
Things required for physical growth, development and health. Things needed to stay alive eg food, clothing, healthcare, hygiene, warmth etc
Intellectual needs
To learn, use thinking and other mental skills. Activities that promote mental stimulation eg education or employment, help to develop these needs.
Emotional needs
The need to feel psychologically and emotionally secure, to feel that we are loved and have a sense of belonging within our family and other social groups. People strive for personal security, enjoyment in life, happiness, love and commitment and try to avoid unpleasant emotions, eg worry, loneliness or grief.
Social needs
Connection to the local community that enable them to feel connected and to find stimulation and company through their contact with others.
What happens if an individuals needs are not met?
An individual who lives in cold, dirty conditions with an unbalanced diet and less likely to feel safe and secure and are more likely to become ill. Those whose social needs are not met and who lack love and affection will find it harder to form relationships and will have low self esteem. They may lack confidence and will be less likely to succeed.
