The need for transport systems Flashcards
Why do plants need a transport system?
because they have a small SA to volume ratio (multicellular) so diffusion won’t be sufficient to meet metabolic demands
Definition of mass flow
the bulk movement of materials through transpiration (water in xylem) or translocation (sucrose in phloem)
What are the 3 minerals that plants need that have the same function? What is it?
-nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfer
-produce proteins, nucleic acids and membranes
What are the other 2 minerals that plants need? Explain why
-potassium regulates water potential between cells
-calcium regulates water potential, forms cell walls and is involved in cell signaling
How many different elements do plants need to grow?
14-each with a role in supporting plant development and functioning
