The Need For Communication Systems Flashcards
What conditions are needed for enzymes to function properly?
- Suitable temperature
- Suitable pH
- an aqueous environment that keeps the substrates and products in solution
- Freedom from toxins and excess inhibitors
What is a stimulus?
A change in the external or internal environment of an organism which the body must respond to
What is a response?
The way in which an organism changes its behaviour or physiology in reaction to a stimulus
What the internal cells and tissues environment in animals?
Tissue fluid
How does the internal environment change?
The cells metabolic activities change the cells environment as substances move out of cells into tissue fluid
What is a stimulus in the internal environment?
Accumulation of excess waste and toxins eg CO2 which alters the tissue fluids pH
What are the features of a good communication system?
Covers the whole body
Enables cells to communicate with each other
Enables specific communication
Enables rapid communication
Enable short term and long term responses
What is cell signalling?
the way in which cells communicate with each other
different types of cell communication
Cells to cells
Between cell components
How does cell signalling work?
One cell/organelle releases a chemical that is detected by another cell or organelle
Cells have cell surface receptors
Different molecules send different signals
2 major communication system?
Neuronal
Hormonal
Neuronal system summary
Interconnected network of neurones that signal to each other across synapse junctions
Rapid response to stimuli
Hormonal system summary
system uses blood to transport signals
Cells in endocrine system releases a hormone directly into the blood
Hormone is recognised by specific target cells
Enables longer term responses
