The Nature of Science Flashcards
Bias
cause to feel or show inclination or prejudice for or against someone or something.
constent
A quantity that is unknown but assumed to have a fixed value in a specified mathematical context.
control
A scientific control is an experiment or observation designed to minimize the effects of variables other than the independent variable.
Density
The density, of a substance is its mass per unit volume.
Dependent Variable
The dependent variable is the variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment.
Experiment
An experiment is a procedure carried out to support or refute a hypothesis.
Graph
a diagram (as a series of one or more points, lines, line segments, curves, or areas) that represents the variation of a variable in comparison with that of one or more other variables.
Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a proposed explanation for a phenomenon.
Independent Variable
It is a variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables you are trying to measure.
Mass
the amount of matter or substance that makes up an object.
Model
Scientific modelling is a scientific activity, the aim of which is to make a particular part or feature of the world easier to understand, define, quantify, visualize, or simulate by referencing it to existing and usually commonly accepted knowledge
Scientific Law
Scientific laws or laws of science are statements, based on repeated experiments or observations, that describe or predict a range of natural phenomena.
Scientific Method
a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
Standard
a standard (or etalon) is an object, system, or experiment that bears a defined relationship to a unit of measurement of a physical quantity
Technology
the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.
Scientific Theory
A theory is a carefully thought-out explanation for observations of the natural world that has been constructed using the scientific method
Variable
A variable is anything that can change or be changed. In other words, it is any factor that can be manipulated, controlled for, or measured in an experiment
Volume
the degree of loudness or the intensity of a sound also
SI
It is the only system of measurement with an official status in nearly every country in the world.
