the nature of science Flashcards
bias
A preference for or against one idea, thing or person.
constant
A value that affects a dependent variable.
control
A scientific control is one in which the subject or a group would not be tested for the dependent variables.
density
A mass of a unit volume of a material substance.
dependent variable
The variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment. ( a value that changes according to changes from another variable )
experiment
A scientific test in which you perform a series of actions and carefully observe their effects in order to learn about something.
graph
A diagram that represents the variation of a variable in comparison with that of one or more other variables.
hypothesis
A hypothesis is an educated guess, or a guess you make based on information you already know.
independent variable
The characteristic of a psychology experiment that is manipulated or changed by researchers, not by other variables in the experiment.
mass
A measurement of how much matter is in an object. (ex. total number, density and type of atoms in a object.)
Model
represent an idea , event, or object to help understand.
scientific law
A statement of what happens in nature and that is true all the time
scientific method
The principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of a problem
standard
An object, system, or experiment that bears a defined relationship to a unit of measurement of a physical quantity.
technology
the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life
