The Nature of Science Flashcards
Bias
Bias is a preference for or against one idea, thing, or person.
Constant
A quantity that is unknown but assumed to have a fixed value in a specified mathematical context.
Control
One in which the subject or a group would not be tested for the dependant variable.
Density
Density is a measure of how compact the mass in a substance or object is.
Dependant Variable
The variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment.
Experiment
A scientific test in which you perform a series of actions and carefully observe their effects in order to learn
Scientific Method
The scientific method is a method of inquiry and experimentation which is based on factual and measurable evidence to ensure objective conclusions.
Technology
Technology refers to methods, systems, and devices which are the result of scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes.
Independent Variable
It is a variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables you are trying to measure.
Graph
A diagram that represents the variation of a variable in comparison with.
Hypothesis
An idea that proposes a tentative explanation about a phenomenon or a narrow set of phenomena observed in the natural world.
Mass
Mass is a measurement of how much matter is in an object.
Model
A physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes.
Scientific Law
In general, a scientific law is the description of an observed phenomenon.
Standard
An object, system, or experiment that bears a defined relationship to a unit of measurement of a physical quantity.
