The Nature of Science Flashcards
Bias
A preference for or against one idea, thing or person.
Constant
A quantity that is unknown but assumed t have fixed vale in a specified mathematical context.
Control
One in which the subject or a group would not be tested for the dependent variables.
Density
Mass of a unit volume of a material substance.
Dependent Variable
Something that depends on other factors.
Experiment
A scientific test in which you preform a series of actions and carefully observe their effects in order to learn about something.
Graph
A diagram that represents the variations of the variable in comparison with one or more other variables.
Hypothesis
An idea that proposes tentative explanation about a phenomenon or a narrow set of phenomenon observed in the natural world.
Independent Variable
A variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by other variables you are trying to measure.
Mass
Both a property of a physical body and a measure of its resistance acceleration when a net force is applied.
Model
A physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas.
Scientific Law
A description of an observed phenomenon.
Scientific Method
A method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century.
Standard
An object, system, or experiment that bears a defined relationship to a unit of measurement of a physical quantity.
Technology
Machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge.
Scientific Theory
A carefully thought-out explanation for observations of the natural world that has been constructed using the scientific method.
Variable
A variable is anything that can be change or be changed.
Volume
Three dimensional space that is occupied by an object.
SI
A scientific way of of expressing the magnitudes or quantities of important natural phenomena.
