The Nature of Science Flashcards
Bias
A particular tendency or trend that is preconceived or unreasoned. (unfair judgement)
Constant
A value that does not change when other variables change
Control
A standard by which the tests are compared.
Density
The state or quality of being dense : compactness: closely set or crowded condition. (thickness)
Dependent Variable
A value that changes according to changes from another variable
Experiment
A test, trial, or tentative procedure
Graph
A diagram that represents the variation of a variable in comparison with that of one or more other variables.
Hypothesis
A possible explanation using what you know and observe. (educated guess)
Independent Variable
A value that affects a dependent variable.
Mass
A body of coherent matter, usually of indefinite shape and often of considerable size:
Model
A physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes (diagram or picture)
Scientific Law
A statement of what happens in nature and that is true all the time.
Scientific Method
The method that science used to investigate. Also when a hypothesis is tested.
Standard
an object, system, or experiment that bears a defined relationship to a unit of measurement of a physical quantity. (a reference that is used to calibrate measurements)
Technology
The application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life
Scientific Theory
An explanation of things or events based on knowledge from observation and experiments.
Variable
A quantity that can have more than one value.
Volume
The quantity of three-dimensional space occupied by a liquid, solid, or gas.
SI (International System of Units)
A complete metric system of units of measurement for scientists
