The Nature of Science Flashcards
Bias
A particular tendency, especially one that is preconceived or unreasoned
Constant
Not changing or varying
Control
To exercise restraint or direction over
Density
mass per unit volume
Dependent Variable
The event studied and expected to change when the independent variable is changed
Experiment
A test, trial, or tentative procedure
Graph
A diagram representing a system of connections or interrelations among two or more things by a number of distinctive dots, lines, bars, etc
Hypothesis
A testable educated guess
Independent Variable
A variable whose variation does not depend on that of another
Mass
the quantity of matter as determined from its weight or from Newton’s second law of motion
Model
A standard or example for imitation or comparison
Scientific Law
The description of an observed phenomenon
Scientific Method
A method of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data are gathered, a hypothesis is formulated from these data, and the hypothesis is empirically tested.
Standard
Something considered by an authority or by general consent as a basis of comparison; an approved model
Technology
The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science
Scientific Theory
A coherent group of propositions formulated to explain a group of facts or phenomena in the natural world and repeatedly confirmed through experiment or observation
Variable
Something that may or does vary or change; a variable feature or factor
Volume
The amount of space, measured in cubic units, that an object or substance occupies
SI
International System of Units
