Foundational
Foundational belies are beliefs which existed from the beginning of a religious tradition. They help to identify and define what a religious tradition is and are essential to the tradition.
Example: The belief of only one God
Fundamental
Fundamental beliefs are beliefs which other beliefs have been built upon. They shape the tradition’s world view and are vitally influential in shaping adherents’ understanding of meaning.
Subsequent
Subsequent beliefs are beliefs that form later and are not essential to the tradition. They do however help to shape the character of a religious tradition and give it a unique place amongst other religions and denominations.
Example: Giving up meat on fridays during Lent in respect to Jesus
Distinctive
Distinctive beliefs are beliefs which are unique to a religious tradition. These can be beliefs which are only found in one religious tradition or be different interpretations of foundational beliefs.
Example: The belief in the trinity.
