The nature of matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume
What are examples of matter?
air , desk,orange juice
What are the three common states of matter?
solid-ice cube liquid-water gas-water vapor
What are physical properties?
Properties that can be oberserved without changing the identity of the substance.
What is a substance?
Anything that contains only one kind kind of material
What are examples of a substance?
suger,water,carbon
What are examples of physical properties
density,color,hardness,odor,magnetism,bioling pot
What is element?
A subtance that cannot be broken down further into substances.
What are 8 examples of an element?
carbon,oxygen,hydrogen,zinc,gold,copper,lead,uranium.
What is an compound?
A substance whose unit is made up of more than one element CHEMICALLY COMBINED
What are examples of compounds?
suger,water,iron,sulfide
What is a mixture?
Any material made up of two or more substances PHYSICALLY COMBINED
What are examples of mixture?
kool-aid, chocolate milk,cake batter
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
a mixture in which the substances are distributed unevenly
What are examples heterogeneous mixture?
chocolate chip cookies, oil/water, pizza
What is a homogeneous mixtures?
A mixture in which the substances are distributed evenly.
What are examples of homogeneous mixtures?
milk, coffee, kool-aid, salt water, lemonade, tea
How do you separate mixtures?
By hand, filter, evaporation, magnets, sifting, buoyancy
What is a solid?
is neither liqid nor gas a maintains its own shape. Particles are moving very slowly
What is a liquid?
Matter that can take on a different shape. Particles are moving around, but not out of control.
What is a gas?
a vapor that is fluid in from and can expand indefinitely. Particles are moving fast and out of control.
What is an atom?
smallest part of matter
What is the periodic table?
A chart that shows the elements in order of increasing atomic numbers.
What is a solution?
a mixture of one substance disolved in another
