The Nature of Life Flashcards
Proteins
Food molecules that are amino acids such as meat
Stimulus
Anything that causes a living organism to react.
Carbohydrates
Food molecules that are sugars and starches.
Lipids
Food molecules that are fatty acids such as cholesterol, oils and waxes.
Minerals
An object made of natural occurrence. Iron, salt
Vitamins
A group on organic compounds needed for growth.
Chloroplasts
Where photosynthesis takes place
Vacuole
A space inside the cytoplasm of a cell used for storing things.
Cell Wall
The outside of a cell
Locomotion
The life process of moving from place to place by the organisms own choice.
Soluble
Something can be dissolved in water
Cellular Respiration
The process of the cell making energy (ATP)
Niche
An animal’s habitat.
Life Processes
Things that organisms do to live
Nutrition
The life process of food-getting or food-making such as photosynthesis.
Glucose
A sugar that is an important energy source.
Ingestion
Eating or consuming something.
Digestion
The process of breaking down food into smaller pieces so the body can use it.
Enzymes
Chemicals that help break down food.
Sessile
An organism that is fixed in one place.
Absorption
The movement of soluble food through a cell membrane.
Diffusion
The process of allowing soluble solutions to pass through a selective membrane.
Semi-Preamble
The same process as diffusion.
Osmosis
The passage of water across a selective membrane.
