The National Grid Flashcards

1
Q

What is the role of the step up and step down transformers

A

The step up transformer decreases the current and increases the potential difference, meaning that there is less friction between the electrons and the wire, resulting in less thermal energy being wasted, therefore making the energy more efficient. The cables also don’t have to be replaced as often as they don’t become damaged from overheating.

The step down transformer increases the current and decreases the potential difference, which ensures that the electricity is at a safe, usable level for appliances.
