The National Grid Flashcards
What is the role of the step up and step down transformers
The step up transformer decreases the current and increases the potential difference, meaning that there is less friction between the electrons and the wire, resulting in less thermal energy being wasted, therefore making the energy more efficient. The cables also don’t have to be replaced as often as they don’t become damaged from overheating.
The step down transformer increases the current and decreases the potential difference, which ensures that the electricity is at a safe, usable level for appliances.
What are the stages of the national grip?
Power generation
Step up transformer
Pylons and cables
Step down transformer
Housing
The structure of the step up transformer
More coils on the secondary than the primary
The structure of the step down transformer
More coils on the primary than the secondary
What are transformers made of
Wire coiled around 2 sides of a soft iron core
P.d primary x current primary =
VpIp
P,d secondary x current secondary

How do you tell is the transformer is primary or secondary
Look at the primary p.d compared to the secondary
