The National Grid Flashcards
1
Q
Why is a high current inefficient?
A
As the wires heat up, thermal energy is lost to the surroundings.
2
Q
Explain why the national grid is efficient at transferring energy.
A
The National Grid distrubutes energy at a high potential difference but a low current.
So, more power can be distributed per second (P=VI).
A low current reduces energy loss.
3
Q
What is the function of a step-up transformer?
A
Increases potential difference (400,000V) but decreases current.
4
Q
What is the function of a step-down transformer?
A
Increase current but decrease potential difference (230V).
