Who were the Narodniks? (populists)
A group of 2000 Young people from the intelligentsia who traveled to the countryside aiming to persuade the peasantry that the future of Russia depended on their development.(development of the peasant commune)
who was the key individual who encouraged the group?
Pyotr Lavrov
what did they aim to explain?
the resentment felt since Emancipation about the peasant’s lack of land and heavy tax burden they still carried
what became known as nardonyism
The idea of “going to the people” became known as Narodnyism
what did some nardoniks try do?
tried dressing and talking like peasants
How did the peasantry react to the Narodnkis?
with hostility - many of the visitors were reported to authorities
why did the peasants react with hostility?
due to the peasants ignorance,superstition, prejudice and deep-rooted loyalty to the tsar
what did the peasants loyalty to the tsar mean?
-the incomers (Narodniks) were reported to the authorities
how many of them were arrested?
around 1600 of them
How successful were the Narodniks in opposition?
-not very successful:
loyal peasants to the tsar reported them and 1600 were arrested
2nd attempt was also unsuccessful and resulted in more arrests and a series of show trials
despite its failures the Nardoniks meant that
it helped move radical opposition away from underground meeting rooms and ran into the countryside and made the government more aware of the depth of feeling of its opponents
