The Mysticism of Numbers Flashcards
One
This number represents the beginning of all things. In effect, all numbers are manifestations of one. Some ancients even argued against counting one as a number, as it is the source of numbers. It is the initial impulse and the sum of all things. It is unity of the Godhead made manifest and the symbol of wisdom.
Two
The number two represents polarity and duality. By the power of the duad, the deep was created as a mirror to the heaven above. It symbolized ignorance, but the Pythagoreans also called it the mother of wisdom.
Three
It is the first equilibrium of unities. It represents peace, prudence, temperance, friendship and it is the cause of wisdom and understanding. The ancients considered the triad sacred, because it contains the monad and the duad in perfect balance and harmony.
Four
It represents the root of all things, the fountain of nature, and connects all things in nature.
Five
It is the sacred symbol of light, vitality and health. It symbolizes the fifth element ether. Sometimes we refer to it as the Hierophant or the priest of the mysteries, due to its spiritual connection.
Six
Considered the perfection of all parts, the ancients called it the form of forms, the articulation of the universe, and the maker of the soul.
Seven
The number seven is one of the most sacred of numbers and, for the Pythagoreans, it was called ‘worthy of veneration’ . They connected it with religion and called it the number of life. It represents fortune, custody, dreams and visions, and all that leads things to their end. It is also the number of the Divine law.
Eight
This number represents love, counsel, law, and convenience. It was the number associated with the Eleusinian mysteries.
Nine
It is the number of human beings, because of their nine-month embryonic gestation. In effect, it is the end and termination of the nine digits. Among its keywords are horizon and ocean, because of the belief that they were without end. Likewise, all the cycles that come after the number containing the previous digits are boundless and limitless.
