The Muscle System Flashcards
Skeletal muscle
striated, voluntary
Cardiac muscle
branched, striated, involuntary
Smooth muscle
visceral, nonstriated, involuntary
Excitability
– receive and respond to a stimuli, usually a neurotransmitter
Contractility
shorten forcibly when adequately stimulated
Extensibility
extend or stretch, even beyond their resting length, when relaxed
Elasticity
recoil and resume resting length after stretching
Characteristics
Excitability, Contractility, Extensibility, Elasticity
Functions
Produce Movement, Maintain Posture and Body Position, Stabilize Joints, Generate Heat
Produce Movement
skeletal muscles used for all locomotion; cardiac muscles & smooth muscle for rhythmic beating of heart and constriction/dilation of blood vessels, maintaining blood pressure; smooth muscle for organs of the digestive, renal and reproductive tracts propel substances
Maintain Posture and Body Position
Counteract the constant downward pull of gravity
Stabilize Joints
Strengthen and stabilize joints of the skeleton
Generate Heat
Contraction produces heat, playing a role in temperature regulation
