what is the multi model store of memory
Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffin’s (1968 - 1971) multi - store model describes how info flows through through the memory system
The model suggests that memory is made up of three stores linked by processing
how does the MSM ork
stimulus from the environment enters the sensory register
info then passes into the STM and after prolonged maintenance/ rehearsal it enters into the LTM
This can enter back into the STM by retrieval
what is the sensory register
stimulus form the environment e.g. sound of someone’s name into the sensory registers along with lots of other sense like sights, smells and so on
this part of the memory is not just one but several for each of our five senses
the two main are:
- iconic ( visual info are coded here)
-echoic memory ( sound/ auditory info is coded here)
how long does the material in sensory registers last
material in sensory registers last only very briefly - the duration is less than half a second
what is the capacity of the sensory resistor
its can store a lot of material e.g. there is a million cells in an eye all storing data
what is the capacity of the short term memory store
it is known to have a limited capacity because it can only contain a certain number of “things before forgetting takes place
STM is on average can hold between 5 and 9 items of info
what is maintenance control
it occurs when we repeat (rehearse) material to ourselves over and over agin
we can keep info in the STM as long as we rehearse it
if we rehearse long enough, it passes into long term memory (LTM)
what is the capacity of the long term memory store
it is a potentially permanent store of info if the info is rehearsed for a prolonged time
Psychologists believe that its capacity is unlimited and can last very many years
how can we transfer material from the LTM to the STM
when we want to transfer material stored in LTM back to the STM, we use a process called retrieval ( remembering)
according to the MSM no memories are recalled directly from the LTM
