The Multi Store Model Flashcards
What is the multi store model ?
Stimulus from the environment
I
Short term memory store —> response (remembering)
I I
Retrieval Prolonged rehearsal
I I
Long term memory store
What is the sensory register and its purposes ?
It will receive the stimuli from the environment and stores it based on its sense - it has high capacity
What is maintenance rehearsal ?
When we repeat material to ourselves and then this will make data stored in the STM become LTM.
What is retrieval ?
When material is in the LTM and we want to recall it it has to be transferred back o the STM by the process of retrieval.
What is one strength of the multi store model ?
P - one strength is research to support showing STM and LTM are different
E - Baddeley founded that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when using our STM + we mix up words that have similar meanings when using our LTM
E - this supports the MSM’s view that these two memory stores are separate and independent
Name one limitation of the multi store model ?
P - one limitation is evidence suggesting there is more than one STM store
E - KF had amnesia , STM recall for digits was poor when he heard them but better when he read them - other studies confirm there also may be separate STM sore for non-verbal sounds
E - therefore the MSM is wrong to claim there is just one STM store processing different types of information
Name another limitation of the ultimate store memory model ?
P - one limitation is prolonged rehearsal is not needed for the transfer between the STM to the LTM
E - Craik and Watkins argued there are two types of rehearsal called maintenance and elaborative - maintenance is the one used in the MSM - but elaborative is needed or LTM storage e.g. when you link information to your existing knowledge or think about its meaning
E - this suggests that the MSM does not fully explain how long term storage is achieved
