the multi-store memory model Flashcards
define the multistore memory model
an explanation of memory based on three separate memory stores and how information is transferred between these stores
what is the sensory register
information at the senses such as eyes or ears which is retained for a brief moment , large capacity and limited duration
outline the movement of information in the short term memory
1) information is taken in by the sensory register, most of which receives no attention and remains there until forgotten after a few seconds
2) if attention is paid to one of the sensory stored then data is transferred to the STM
3) information enters the STM and can be used for immediate tasks or later, the duration is limited and will go quickly if not rehearsed
4) if information is rehearsed and rehearsal is maintained information will enter the LTM, or new information displaces old as STM has limited capacity
5) long term memory has unlimited capacity and duration so information remains there until retrieved back into the STM for use
evaluate the multistore model
1) supporting evidence - HM case study, brain damage resulting in operation and removal of hippocampus, personality, and intellect remained but LTM couldn’t form
2) challenging evidence - the working memory model - too simple
3) issue and debate- idiographic vs nomothetic
4) research methods - case studies= qualitative data therefore hard to repeat etc, based on lab studies
